That probably wasn’t the smartest thing he had ever done. He knew better than to fire a shot without making sure the horses were secure, but he was pretty pleased with himself. That turkey would be some nice grub once it had been cooked up for dinner. They could clean it up and roast it over the fire in no time.

“Hey, Margaret, look at the size of this guy!” He chanced a glance over his shoulder to the spot by the fire where she’d been just seconds ago, but the blanket was now empty. “Margaret?” he called out as he turned, noticing her stomping across the field to where the horses had disappeared. “Hey, Margaret, just leave the horses! I’ll get them after…”

He didn’t finish, because she apparently had other ideas, including not listening to a word he was saying. “What the hell is she so pissed about?” he muttered, looking over to where the wild turkey lay in the grass and then over to the trees to where his bride had disappeared. If he left the turkey, it might not be there for long, but Margaret was obviously bent out of shape about something. Having to choose between smoothing over his bride’s ruffled feathers and dealing with his kill…well, he was not a happy man.

He actually had to pause for a second and look again at the trees before he swore. “Dammit, Margaret!” he shouted, his voice echoing across the lake. Of course she had heard—and everyone back in Post Falls most likely had, too. He could feel his irritation rising as he set the safety on his rifle and, with a few more curses under his breath, started after Margaret.

He’d just made it to the shoulder of the woods when she broke through the brush at a trot on the back of Angel, her Arabian, bareback with no reins. The woman could control horses like no one he had ever seen.

“Hey, I called you,” he said. “What the hell are you doing? I told you I’d get the horses. I had to leave that turkey lying there to be scavenged by some animal, which may already have happened now. That’s dinner, and I don’t really want to start all over again, since I scared off everything with that shot.”

He couldn’t believe it! He was talking to the rear end of the horse, as she kept going all the way back to camp. When she hopped off the horse, he called out, “Hey, Margaret, can you see if that turkey is still there and grab it if it is? I’ll go and get the other horses.”

She didn’t answer. In fact, she tied her horse and then set the blanket and saddle on her. Joe rubbed his head. She obviously wanted to go and get the horses, but by the time Joe reached her, she had taken the bridle and climbed in the saddle, giving him a look that made his heart sink. He’d only seen that look once before.

She narrowed her eyes and said, “This is supposed to be my honeymoon, Joe.
